Exhibition: [‘sing/what draws/the eye’s belief’] book works, paintings & ephemera
by Eilish Martin
A vital addition Eilish’s extensive oeuvre, this tête-bêche (head-to-toe) double book, published by Macha Press, is of a piece with the Japanese ink drawings, hand-made accordion books and vibrant watercolours in its fusion of linguistic, visual and sonic strategies. The abecedarian sequences and haunting erasures of ! All’arme, like the herons, black swans, question marks, commas, dashes and exclamation marks woven through ? And what… if not, dive and surface across visual works that testify to the range and complexity of her inter-art aesthetic. Set in harmonious conversation, these are elements that, as Eilish writes, ‘sing/what draws/the eye’s belief’.
Together with ! All’arme / ? And what… if not, [‘sing/what draws/the eye’s belief’] catalogues a portion of what Eilish herself has referred to as the ‘compulsive journey’ of her poetry-making and verbal-visual improvisations across the past ten years.
